ABSTRACT

While the technology involved in building the tunnels has been truly remarkable, the perhaps rather humdrum logistical support needed to achieve the work lay at the heart of the project. This chapter concerns the UK logistical services and covers the delivery of goods to site, the construction railway, the standard-gauge railway in construction mode, and various services which used the service tunnel after the construction railway was removed. The key role of the pithead site at sea level at Shakespeare Cliff is described.
