ABSTRACT

One could argue that the initial access developments were those that took place early in the last century. The original platform at Shakespeare Cliff, 16m above sea level, was formed in 1844 during construction of the railway between Dover and Folkestone and lies between the Shakespeare tunnels to the east and Abbots Cliff tunnels to the west. It was constructed of chalk rubble from the cliffs and its function was to provide a berm for the rail tracks.
