ABSTRACT
The philosophy of tunnel boring machine (TBM) design is to ensure a capacity to deal with conditions known to exist for the largest percentage of the tunnel drive, and to provide sufficient capability in the machine to overcome the unexpected, without impairing the efficiency in the known majority of conditions.
