ABSTRACT

Two fleets of specially commissioned, powerful six-axle locomotives were ordered to haul trains through the Channel Tunnel. These are, first, Eurotunnel's own locomotives for its passenger-vehicle and freight shuttles; and, second, the Class 92 locomotives that haul the European Night Services and freight services. In addition, the national railways commissioned a fleet of Eurostar trains; these substantially modified TGVs operate international services through the Tunnel between London (and beyond) and Paris/Brussels. For the shuttle and Class 92 locomotives, Brush Traction of Loughborough

teamed up with ASEA Brown Boveri (ABB) in Zurich to secure the contracts. Broadly, Brush assumed responsibility for the mechanical portion, while ABB designed and supplied the electrical equipment. All these locomotives were assembled by Brush at Loughborough.
