ABSTRACT

Externally, double-deck loading wagons closely resemble carrier wagons, although the window arrangements differ. Two large sliding doors, 6m long, on each side let vehicles drive in and out. Cars entering and leaving the lower deck use the doors nearer the carrier wagons. The further doors lead to an internal ramp, for cars to reach or leave the upper deck. Normally, the two decks load and unload from adjacent platforms simultaneously, thus speeding up the operation. To span the space between doors and platforms, two bridging plates can lowered from inside the wagon; these are operated by hydraulic rams concealed in the floor.
