ABSTRACT

The functional design requirements of the terminals were concise: to take vehicles from the motorway system and load them onto shuttle trains. The scale of this operation (700 cars and 113 heavy goods vehicles per hour), the innovative nature of the operation and the time limits imposed were more onerous. Taking vehicles directly from a motorway with the minimum of interruption directly onto an enclosed railway wagon in less than 15 min was significantly more demanding than any such operation elsewhere in the world.
