ABSTRACT

This paper describes the microstructure and the basic mechanical properties of both the reinforcing coir fibre and the fibre-cement composite. Results of SEM micrograph analysis revealed insights on the microstructure of fibre, its decomposition behaviour, and the interfacial characteristics between fibre and matrix. Results of mechanical properties showed significant improvement in post-cracking strength, toughness and ductility of the matrix due to the reinforcing capability of the coir fibre. Properties in compression and flexure were summarized in simple empirical equations in the form of composite mechanics approach.
