ABSTRACT

In construction and maintenance of bridges and overbridges, which are subjected to substantial strains and dynamic loads, the protective coverings are conventionally made of reinforced concrete. Application of SFRC instead of RC material with at least the same features considering its strength and durability but technologically more simple and lighter, was considered. It would allow the execution of works easier and diminish the weight of protective covering and thus the weight of a structure as a whole. On the basis of laboratory tests the authors proposed to substitute RC, used as a protective covering, with SFRC. The protective covering made of SFRC with “Harex” type fibres was applied on a railway bridge with a span of 223.8 m. In the paper the laboratory tests results of SFRC carried out prior to its application on the bridge are given. The observations on execution of works and preliminary test results on structural performance of SFRC in the bridge are also presented.
