ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION For the last thirty years structural analysis to reduce weight and first cost, has dominated the design effort in engineering offices. It has also dominated engineering education. The computer has enabled structural proportions to be minimised using strength criteria which generally presume no deterioration. Materials specification has similarly been concentrated on strength. The contractors and materials suppliers have made progress mainly in speeding construction, maximising early strength and minimising cost.
