ABSTRACT

The above method of analysis of isolated columns has recently been extended to include the problem of 3-dimensional frames with or without side-sway. The analysis takes proper account of the behaviour of flexible connections, such as those encountered in precast frames. A computer program SWANS A has been written, based on the new method of analysis. The method offers significant advantages over 3-d finite element analysis, with which it compares in accuracy of results^3*. In this paper, the program has been used to study the behaviour of a newly developed grillage slab system Ortho. The aim of the study was to determine whether testing, which can be expensive and requires time, could be supplemented by a rigorous method of analysis, in examining all aspects of the behaviour of a new structural system.
