ABSTRACT

In this chapter, examples are given of the approach to the estimation of the response of a structure when an extreme event occurs. This calculation can be performed at the time of design of the structure, since all parameters can be estimated without any measurement of the actual behaviour of the structure. It should be remembered, however, that in the absence of measurements from the structure there is a confidence interval associated with the estimate of the response. The size of this interval will be dependent on the quality of the information leading to the estimate.
