In practice, there are two fundamental translational modes of vibration for tall buildings. It is a minimum-energy requirement that these modes are orthogonal. Orthogonal signifies that the modes are at 90° to each other. This is a mathematical requirement, not a geometrical one, although for tall buildings the effect is the same, and the fundamental orthogonal mode is set at 90° to the fundamental one.
