ABSTRACT

The specimen shall be constructed on a clean level surface with the sides at right angles to the base and the top parallel to the base (checked with a spirit level. The specimen should be built off a steel plate and should be capped with a similar plate. The plate should be at least 12 mm thick and 20 mm greater in length and breadth than the specimen. The construction should, where possible, be carried out with the units in the same attitude as they will be in the masonry. All materials used for the work should themselves be at least 28 days old before the test is started. All joints shall be of uniform thickness and full of mortar. Frogs should not be exposed at the end of a specimen. Perforations should not be filled. Figure B.4a illustrates a typical specimen which conforms to the sizing and capping recommendations.
