ABSTRACT

This RILEM recommendation specifies a method of determining the bond strength between bricks or blocks and mortar.

For the purpose of this recommendation bond is defined as the maximum tensilestrength of the joint between mortar and a brick or block as determined by a direct pull-test perpendicular to the surface of the mortar. The test may be used to determine:

— the bond between specified bricks or blocks and specified mortar; — the relative bond between specified bricks and different mortars; — the relative bond of masonry from the building site or existing buildings, in

case of doubts about the quality, structural defects, etc. If the specimens are constructed in a laboratory, they shall be prepared in a similar

manner to that used in work, with the mortar applied to the bed face of the brick or block.
