ABSTRACT

The ever increasing need for high levels of thermal insulation in houses and residential accommodation has led one UK company, at least, to look to a method of walling which is a complete departure from the traditional masonry cavity walls. Springvale EPS Ltd. purchased the licence for a French system of poured concrete walls in which the concrete is cast between permanent shutters of expanded polystyrene. In 1988 the company joined with Queen’s University Belfast to form a Teaching Company, supported by SERC and DTI, to adapt the system to British design and construction

practice. The outcome, in 1992, was a certificate of approval from the British Board of Agrement.
