H e wen t on t o explai n th e possibl e mechanism s outline d i n hi s pape r togethe r wit h th e reasons why such early bridges were able to cope with the temperature effects . H e considered that there was a need fo r a review of the current allowances being made for temperature effects i n the light o f satisfactory performance of so many jointless bridges in recent years.
