ABSTRACT

T h e float m e t h o d is u sed in the measu remen t of s treamflow where excess ive velocit ies , dep ths and floating drift prohibit the use of a current meter . T h e m e t h o d consis ts essential ly of observing the t ime required for a float to t raverse a course of k n o w n length and not ing its posit ion in the channe l so that

where ν is the float veloci ty ( m s - 1 ) , L is the dis tance travelled (m) , and t is the t ime of travel over dis tance L (s).
