ABSTRACT

T h e ve loc i t y - a r ea m e t h o d for the determinat ion of discharge in open channe ls consis ts of measu remen t s of s t ream velocity, depth of flow and dis tance across the channe l b e t w e e n observat ion verticals. The velocity is measured at one or more points in each vertical by current meter and an average velocity de te rmined in each vertical. The discharge is derived from the sum of the product of mean velocity, depth and width be tween verticals. T h e discharge so obtained is normal ly used to establish a relation be tween water level (stage) and streamflow. O n c e establ ished this s t a g e - d i s c h a r g e relation is used to derive discharge values from records of stage at the gauging station.
