ABSTRACT

Current Government policy is directed at reducing aggregate demand from U.K. mainland quarries from the current 200 million tonnes per annum in 1991 down to 192 million in 2011. However, aggregate demand is anticipated to increase from 200 million to 240 million tonnes per annum in the same time period. As we have graphically illustrated a growing supply gap will become apparent. (See Fig. 1.)

This window of opportunity is open to two sources, being either:-

(a) Increasing market share of aggregate supply from either imports or from the coastal super quarries; or

(b) Increasing utilisation of recycled construction materials.
