Abstract Three modification s o f por e wate r ar e distinguished : Structured , prestructure d an d bulk. Wate r uptake b y condensation an d suctio n is outlined. A classification of pore sizes i s give n o n thi s basis . Th e freez e tha w behaviou r o f th e modification s i s described. Th e influence of deicing chemicals i s summarised. The basic prerequisite s of a test procedur e ar e derive d from thes e considerations. Th e results wit h respec t t o precision, reproducibility, independence o f testing institute and calibration to practical behaviour are shown.
