ABSTRACT

Abstract The purpos e o f th e wor k wa s t o tes t th e hypothesi s tha t therma l incompatibilit y between aggregat e an d binde r phase in high strengt h concret e lead s t o deterioration under rapi d temperatur e cycle s eve n i n a temperatur e rang e wher e n o ic e formation takes place. Concrete wit h water/binder - ratio of 0.30 containin g 8 % silica fume wa s produced wit h 3 aggregate types: Quartz Diorite , Limestone and lightweight aggregate (Macrolite). Al l thre e concrete s deteriorate d afte r AST M C66 6 testing , whil e temperature cyclin g between + 5 °C and + 27 °C led to small damage (durability factor = 92 ) for Limestone, and no damage for the othe r tw o aggregates. It does not appear that thermal incompatibility between binder phase and aggregate is a major cause of the deterioration commonly observed fo r high strengt h concret e withou t airentrainmen t in ASTM C666 freeze/thaw testing . Keywords: Durability , freeze/thaw testing , thermal incompatibility, ice formation.
