ABSTRACT

Abstract Compressive tests on FRP reinforcement were carried out. The compressive strength of FRP reinforcement is much smaller than the tensile strength, especially for aramidFRP (around ten percent of its tensile strength and reducing with cyclic loading). Next, compression tests on FRP-RC columns were done. The compressive failure of the FR P reinforcement occurred earlier than its compressive strength. From the analytical discussion, it can be shown that FRP reinforcement in the compressive zone woul d possibly fail in compression because of its low compressive strength. As a result, FRP reinforcement such as the aramid-FRP is not suitable as a reinforcement of flexural non-prestressed concrete members subjected to reversed cyclic loading.
