ABSTRACT

J a p a n lies on the east side of the Euras ian plate where it collides with the Pacific plate and the Phil ippine plate, with the Pacific and the Phil ippine plates pushing wes tbound and undernea th , as shown in Figure 8.1. In the same figure is shown also a small-scale sea-ridge in the J apan Sea. This plate-tectonic background controls the seismicity of Japan .
