ABSTRACT

Abstract Full scale field trials of pavement overlays are reported for Airports at three Australian locations, Tullamarine and East Sale in Victoria and Edinburgh in South Australia. Alternative overlay treatments are discussed, with the performance results to date, after up to four years service. Treatments used included geogrids, differing A.C. mixes and concrete pavers. Final results are yet to be determined since any reflective cracking takes several years to show through thick A.C. layers. Pavement cores taken at Tullamarine show no crack initiation. This may be due to insulation of the concrete pavement by the A.C. overlay from temperature changes or the relative newness and flexibility of the A.C. overlay and ability to accommodate stresses from movements in the underlying concrete pavement. The importance of proper installation, to manufacturers specification is observed. Keywords: Airport pavements, asphalt, geogrid, geotextile, Reflective cracking.
