ABSTRACT

Abstract Thispaperdescribesaseriesoftenfullscalefiretestscarriedoutonreinforcedconcrete beamspredominantlyloadedinshear.Allthespecimenswereofsameoveralldimensions. Beamswerecastedinpairscontainingfivedifferentshearreinforcementdetails.Allthe specimenswereloadedwithsinglepointloadatmidspanandexposedtoastandardftre accordingtoBS476:Part20[1].Theobjectiveofthetestprogrammewastoobtaindata tovalidatenumericalanddesignmethods.Inthispaperexperimentalresultsarecompared withtheresultsofafiniteelementmethodandresultsofadesignmethoddevelopedat CityUniversity.Itisconcludedthatthefiniteelementmethodpredictsthefailuretimeand thedeflectedshapeofthebeamsaccurately.Comparisonbetweentheresultsofthedesign methodandtheexperimentsalsoshowsagoodagreement.
