The following subsections provide an introduction to some of the design considerations associated with these components. In this discussion terms such as "diffusion", "advection" and "sorption" are used. The reader unfamiliar with these terms may wish to review Section 1.3 prior to reading the following. A glossary defining key terminology is given in Appendix A; key notation is defined in Appendix B.
