ABSTRACT

Abstract Approaches currently adopted to develop a water saving irrigation management program in the North China Plain are presented. They include the installation of an irrigation scheduling model, the improvement of the surface irrigation practices, and the establishment of an irrigation calendar which responds to both irrigation scheduling and surface irrigation constraints. The application to the Xiongxian area, Hebei Province, P. R. China, shows that when the basin irrigation practices could be improved, the seasonal irrigation depth could be greatly decreased. Keywords: Irrigation scheduling, surface irrigation, water saving.
