ABSTRACT

The former Soviet Union is characterised by a natural geochemical heterogeneity which leads to variable background concentrations of heavy metals. As a result of the naturally high metal concentrations, local populations and livestock are, in some places, exposed to endemic diseases. In addition to the naturally variable background concentrations of metals, anthropogenic metal contamination leads to extremely high heavy metal concentrations in some sites.
