ABSTRACT

Hydrobiological monitoring is of significant importance for the assessment of both water quality and the ecological condition of water bodies. Monitoring systems based only on contaminant concentrations in the aquatic environment do not provide an adequate estimate of water quality or ecosystem integrity, because isolated analyses of certain chemical substances, without taking into consideration the whole ecological situation, do not reflect the complexity of aquatic system inter-relations.
