The use of structural steel, in the commonly recognized sections, dates back to the latter half of the nineteenth century. Allen, in a Technical Information Sheet for the Chartered Institute of Building[!], records that by 1887 Dorman, Long Ltd offered a range of 99 beam sizes as well as a vast range of channel and angle shapes.
