ABSTRACT

Abstract The present and future views of environmentally-friendly concrete, such as environment mitigatable concrete and organisms adaptable concrete, are briefly discussed in this item. Recently, Eco-cement has been developed to utilize the demand to use municipal waste and incineration ash of sewage as a raw material of cement. A wide variety of functions can be rendered to "Porous Concrete(POC)"through which water and air can pass freely, in contrast to ordinary concrete, although mechanical properties of POC such as strength and durability are inferior to those of ordinary concrete in general. Various attempts have been made for the wide usage of POC. For example as the mitigatable usage, POC boards function to absorb noise at particular frequencies which can be controlled by the thickness and porous structures of the POC boards. It is noteworthy that NOx-gas absorbing property is added to the noise-absorbing POC board recently. Also this as organisms adaptable usage, water can be purified by proper microorganisms living on the interior and exterior surfaces of the POC. In this paper, fixing and growing lawns, weeds, and ferns in POC are showed as the application of POC to a planting concrete. As a result, Eco-cement and POC are thought to be useful in the establishment of the sustainable development of mankind. 1 Introduction

Due to the increase in world population, the depletion of fossil fuels, the desertification of tropical rain forests, and the increase in wastes, a significant turning point in the global environment might occur between the years of 2030 and 2050 [1].
