ABSTRACT
CHARLES N.EHLER Director, Office of Oceanography and Marine Assessment, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, Washington, DC 20852 EXXON VALDEZ has fundamentally changed the way many of us are leading their lives. I am a good example of that. I am now devoting literally 100 percent of my time to assessing the damages of that event, and whatever I have left over is going into activities like this conference and my normal business. What I want to do this morning, is discuss two dimensions of what I consider to be major problems in managing the resources of the coastal ocean.
