ABSTRACT

In this chapter we present some human needs in dialogue with electronic systems in the coming generation of automobile. We then discuss how such needs can be met. In particular we discuss dialogue management, the management of competing dialogues with different systems and human cognitive needs in dialogue with one system. In this introduction we shall first take up the role of dialogue in communication. The work described in this contribution took place in the context of the development of a dynamic replanning navigation system (Brown, 1991). We therefore use the navigation system and the needs of the user in navigation as a basis of discussion.
