ABSTRACT

The following work has been carried out within the Swedish research of PROMETHEUS programme 76000 Evaluation. Introducing RTI aims at ensuring a higher level of traffic safety than at present, while simultaneously reducing environmental impacts, travel times and vehicle operating costs. One of our goals, in society in general, is to create a healthy environment. A large percentage of the population spends a great portion of their time on the road, both during working hours and at leisure. It is therefore reasonable to demand a ‘healthy’ traffic system. Health, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is a state of complete physical, psychological, and social well-being, and not only an absence of sickness and weakness. In other words: traffic safety, measured in the number of accidents (or conflicts), is not a sufficient indication of how healthy the system is. Every day stress may also take a toll on health. Therefore, another prerequisite for introducing RTI is that this can be done without reducing the subjective well-being of the road-users.
