ABSTRACT

If we observe real life traffic of today, we are faced with a system containing an almost infinite number of situations. These traffic situations are neither static nor similar, but vary in different respects. For example, the driving task can be everything from driving alone on a six-lane motorway, to critical collision avoidance manoeuvres at intersections. The various driving tasks may be complicated by: adverse driving conditions such as darkness, fog and low friction; by difficult road lay-out and infrastructure; and by too much information. On top of that, the traffic environment also contains chance events or various degrees of uncertainty. Individual drivers with different abilities and limitations are exposed to, and expected to cope with, the described traffic system. If they do not succeed in their task the result may, in the worst case, be an accident.
