ABSTRACT
Introduction The study of the land surface as part of the climate system is important because of the role of the land surface in radiation interception, in partitioning energy and water fluxes, and because it is the part of the climate system with the best and longest data records. The land surface is also important for economic reasons through impact of possible changes in climate.
