ABSTRACT

There are about 20,000 injury accidents at traffic signals every year and many of these are related to violation of the traffic signals. The study of driver behaviour at traffic signals may provide insights into the reasons for violation of traffic signals and ways of reducing the incidence of violation. This study builds on earlier, numerical analysis by the author (Allsop et al 1991, Robertson 1990). Although the numerical analysis of the physical situation at traffic signals provides much useful data, there are a number of behaviours and/or driving situations which cannot be identified using such methods. A qualitative approach using observational techniques can identify many of these behaviours, but on its own cannot put these into the context of the physical situation. This study integrated both aspects by using a qualitative analysis of the data which had been analysed numerically in the earlier study. A statistical analysis of the results of this study, together with more detailed descriptions of the methodology can be found in Robertson (1992).
