ABSTRACT

The debate between atomism and continuity, as fundamental ingredients in our comprehension of the universe, has been going on since the earliest periods in the Western and Oriental civilizations. In ancient times, one asked the question, should one divide up any quantity of matter into finer and finer parts, would there be a final stopping point where one would reach the ‘elementary atom’ of matter? Or, would it be possible for this matter to be divided up ad infinitum in a continuous manner?
