ABSTRACT

The sport of hockey was formally organised in 1883. It is a field invasive game played between teams of eleven players over two halves, each of 35 minutes. Several new rules added to the game in the last decade were designed to maintain the continuity or flow of the game. The now common use of synthetic surfaces for match-play, together with an increased interchange between positional roles and altered styles of play, are likely to result in imposition of increased physiological and physical demands on players (Reilly and Borrie, 1992).
