ABSTRACT

Social systems evolve through countless generations of conflict and confrontation until eventually a consensus is arrived at whereby each individual’s pursuit of selfish aims is tempered by toleration of others’ needs, and an understanding of how co-operative action can afford mutual benefit. The evolved pattern of behaviour is that thereafter recognised as socially acceptable within a community and enforced by religious and civil authority. This process applied equally well at the workplace, and the system of operation in the craft shop prior to the Industrial Revolution by virtue of its genesis met completely the human needs of its members.
