ABSTRACT

Pressure has grown over a number of years for both industry and the public at large to clean up their environmental performance. The public have been encouraged to purchase “environmentally friendly” products, such as: CFC free aerosols, phosphate free washing powders and organic produce. However, the claims of manufacturers about the environmental soundness of their products

have been proved in many cases to be highly exaggerated and often at best misleading. These problems are insignificant though when one considers the environmental damage created by most manufacturing operations. It is this that has promoted the introduction of extensive environment legislation and regulations to control and ultimately reduce the environmental effects of manufacturing and service operations.
