ABSTRACT

In 1969 Skinner (1969) identified the absence of manufacturing in the corporate strategy making process. Since then a considerable amount of effort has been expended on researching the general area of manufacturing and a wide number of publications have occurred on manufacturing strategy as summarised by Neely (1993). These papers can be broadly divided into two types; those that focus on what should be addressed in a strategic debate-the content literatureor how strategies should be developed and implemented-the process literature.
