ABSTRACT

Geographical information systems are used by many people to try to solve spatial problems. This can be really helpful because problems are not as ‘clearcut’ as they used to be or may not truly lie in one discipline or another. Deciding where the new landfill goes in or trying to plan for the location of a new business may require very different types of information upon which decisions will be made. GIS can help provide that information. It can provide maps which show how the data interacts. It can show patterns and relationships. GIS can even be used to query or ask questions of the data to show specific relationships or areas. GIS are a powerful tool for increasing decision-making abilities.
