ABSTRACT

There are a number of risk reduction issues which need to be clarified urgently before we enter the 21st century.

The 20th century has demonstrated very clearly that mankind has become totally dependent on the use of chemicals. The positive advantages include:

• Correct use of pesticides in agriculture to increase crop yields; • Use of pharmaceutical chemicals to reduce illness and promote good health; • Use of biocides and preservatives to increase the storage time of products; • Use of corrosion inhibitors; • Colorants to make products appear aesthetically more attractive; • Polymers, which are light and very durable; and • Semiconductors for the computer industry on which we have a growing

dependence.
