ABSTRACT

A great deal of human activity is concerned with countering the effects of gravity. By implication therefore, so is a good deal of the work of the ergonomist, be it concerned with the design of seating, lifting, or body posture. All evolution since the appearance of the first self replicating living cell has taken place under the influence of the earth’s gravitational field and organs for sensing the direction of this field are incorporated in virtually all organisms and thereby constitute an important element of the overall sensory input. It is even possible, though perhaps not yet important to the work of the ergonomist, that some organisms can sense the subtle variations of the gravity vector imposed by the motion of the moon.
