ABSTRACT
In the autumn of 1884 Lord Rayleigh announced that he was resigning the Cavendish Professorship of Experimental Physics. Strenuous efforts were made to attract Lord Kelvin, the best known physicist of his generation, to the post. However, Kelvin was reluctant to leave Glasgow where he was well established.
