ABSTRACT
Navigators have traditionally been aware that safety in navigation is a result not only of technical features of the vessels but also, and foremost, of the navigator’s skill. Due to the expansion of traffic and the fast pace of technological development of the vessels, the complexity of the navigation system has increased greatly. As a consequence, the require ments of proper operation of the system have become more delicate and the mechanisms of failure more difficult to understand.
