ABSTRACT

Evidencefromobservationalandlaboratorystudiessuggestsapossible linkbetweendietarycalciumandbloodpressure.Toinvestigatethisissue, arandomizedplacebo-controlledclinicaltrialwascarriedoutinagroupof 75normotensivemales.Thedesignofthetrialincludeda4-weekbaseline periodduringwhichweeklybloodpressurereadingsweretakenonall subjectsanda12-weektreatmentperiodduringwhichbiweeklyblood pressuremeasurementswererecordedfor37calciumsupplementation patientsand38controlsubjects.Thereductioninbloodpressureofsome subjects,inresponsetocalciumsupplementation,maybeclinicallyimportant,whereasinotherstheremaybelittleornoresponse.Forsubjects whodorespond,itispossiblethattherearedelaysfromthetimecalcium supplementationiscommencedtothetimeeffectsaremanifest,because themetabolismmayneedtoadjusttothehigherlevelsofcalciumintake.
