I. INTRODUCTION The molecular structure of surfactants is always a combination of a hydrophobic residue with a hydrophilic headgroup. Selection of the hydrophobic residue and of the hydrophilic headgroup determines the properties of the corresponding surfactant. Custom tailoring of the molecular structure and surfactant mixture opens up new fields of application and can provide opti mum solutions to a variety of technical problems. Owing to their manifold and technically controllable structural variants, alkyl glucosides have a firm place within surfactant chemistry, in both special and bulk applications.
