ABSTRACT

Despite recent advances and the introduction of new drugs, no cure for Crohn 's disease exists. This goal must await better understanding of the cause or pathogenesis of this complex, mysterious disorder. Medical therapy, however, may help control the disease and improve the patient's quality of life. In the years since the description of Crohn's disease, many agents have been postulated to have therapeutic potential. Some have been forgotten and others were found to have little or no benefit after controlled trials were completed. Still others await validation. This chapter provides an overview of these intriguing ideas.
